Many students ask me whether learning to play drums at 40, 50, 60 or even 70 makes any sense.

My simple answer is:

It depends!

At any age learning to play drums really depends on how much you'd like to become a drummer and how passionate you are about drumming.

Let's dive deeper:

Do you find yourself doing one or more of the following things?

  • Tapping a drum beat with your fingers and feet - even unconsciously? So that your friends even get annoyed? 🙂
  • Your heart beats faster when listening to drums.
  • While sleeping you dream of playing drums in front of huge audiences?
  • Your YouTube playlists only contain videos of the best drumming performances and your favorite drum lessons, and you even subscribed to my channel?
  • You'd prefer using these drum pencils over normal ones?
  • Your Ebay watchlist contains things like these or even these?
  • Your ringtone on your smartphone sounds like this.

Okay.

You know what I mean! 🙂

These are good signs that you are a drummer (in your heart) already and nobody else can stop you from learning to play drums at 40, 50, 60 or 70!

Learning to play drums at 40

"You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is what they say.

The problem:

Many people really believe that.

The good thing:

This isn't true unless you think it is.

I have been teaching drums since 2003 and all I know after all these years is, that every age group has its own advantages and disadvantages when learning to play drums.
